(UW ATHLETICS) MADISON –Bruno Idžan scored a natural hat trick in the second period to power No. 2 Wisconsin to a 9-1 win over Notre Dame on Saturday at the Kohl Center.
Neither team was able to connect with the net in the first period, but Wisconsin broke through early in the second. Logan Henser buried a rebound to open the scoring, with assists from Weston Knox and Gavin Morrissey.
Eetu Oprana made it 2-0 when he swept the puck around goaltender Patrick Quinlan for his first NCAA goal and first as a Badger.
Notre Dame cut the lead to 2-1 with a power-play goal from Beckham Edwards, but Wisconsin answered on its own power play. Idžan sniped one home for his first goal of the night.
Not long after it was Idžan again, scoring his second power-play goal of the period.
It was Idžan again who sent the puck flying into the net for the Badgers fifth goal of the night and his third consecutive of the game. His hat trick cemented him as the ninth Badger to ever have a natural hat trick. The last came from Simon Tassy on Dec. 29, 2023 during the Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off against Northeastern.
Notre Dame took a five-minute major penalty just after the six-minute mark of the third, and JJ Wiebusch capitalized for his first goal as a Badger.
After Note Dame got called for a pair of five-minute majors at the same time, Luke Osburn added a goal on a cross-ice pass from Wooten.
Soon after, Vasily Zelenov, set up by Wiebusch, tucked one in just before the final minute.
Ryan Botterill capped the scoring with the ninth goal, finishing in front of the net for UW’s sixth power-play goal of the game.
Wisconsin outshot Notre Dame 41-15, to secure the 9-1 win.
