(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) MILWAUKEE – The top two teams in the Horizon League squared off Saturday afternoon, as the top-seeded Milwaukee Panthers took down the Green Bay women’s soccer team in the regular season finale at Milwaukee.
The loss dropped Green Bay to 12-2-4 overall and 7-2-2 in Horizon League action after the defeat. The Phoenix will enter the Horizon League Championships as the No. 2 seed.
“I thought today was a tale of two halves,” said head coach Matt Kagan. “Against the best teams, you only get a few chances, and we created enough in the first half but didn’t capitalize. In the second half, Milwaukee really did a nice job of pinning us in with their ball winning. Having said that, I didn’t think they created a ton, but we need to do a bit better on the corner. The great thing is now we have 10 days to rest and prepare for a semifinal match at home. We will bounce back!”
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams were neck and neck in the first half, with the Phoenix slightly outshooting the Panthers 9-8. Neither team found the back of the net in the first 45.
Milwaukee started to create momentum in the second half, which led to the game’s lone goal in the 69th minute. Kiersten White scored a rebound header in the box after a goal-line clearance from the Phoenix defense. GB was unable to find an equalizer, and Milwaukee secured the 1-0 win.
