Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley (Milwaukee County)
WISCONSIN (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wisconsin’s governor-elect is laying out more of his vision. Democrat David Crowley defeated Republican Tom Tiffany, making history as Wisconsin’s first black governor.
Crowley’s victory over Tiffany comes as Democrats also won control of the Legislature. It follows a closely watched campaign that brought voters across Wisconsin to the polls.
After celebrating Tuesday night, Crowley spoke again this afternoon in Milwaukee. He addressed his plans for Wisconsin and the responsibility that comes with being the state’s next Governor.
Crowley says he is going to first focus on lowering costs for housing, utilities, healthcare and child care. He says he will also deliver meaningful property tax relief.
“We’re going to expand access to quality affordable healthcare that offers real options for families, our children, our seniors, and people with disabilities. We’re going to strengthen our public schools, expand pathways to good paying jobs and apprenticeship opportunities and support small businesses and communities across the state of Wisconsin,” said Crowley.
He shared that this can’t be done alone.
“We’re going to work together, work with Governor Evers, lawmakers, tribal leaders, and local and state employees to ensure a smooth hand off so we can be ready from day one. Our work ahead is about making life better, making it more affordable for working families across the great state of Wisconsin,” said Crowley.
Despite the loss, Tom Tiffany said last night, he hopes Crowley will bring people together and move the state forward.
“We need him to do well as the governor of the State of Wisconsin and lead us because we want Wisconsin to be one of the great states here in America,” said Tiffany.
Crowley says moving Wisconsin forward will take cooperation from both sides of the aisle.
“Good ideas are not republican ideas or democratic ideas. I am willing to work with anyone who’s ready to move the state of Wisconsin forward. While we witnessed major victories in the state legislature last night, I am committed to bringing people together from across the political spectrum and all across the state,” said Crowley.
David Crowley will take office in January.
