Ty Maki (Outagamie Co. Jail)
APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Former Kaukauna middle school teacher Ty Maki was sentenced Monday to 120 days in jail for sending sexually-explicit texts with a person he believed was a 15-year-old girl, but actually was an undercover officer.
Maki, 43, pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to expose a child to harmful descriptions.
Maki was also placed on probation for two years by Judge Kyle Sargent, and was placed on the sex offender registry for 15 years.
Before the sentence was read, Maki apologized, and took responsibility for his actions.
“I spent a lifetime as a father, educator, school leader, coach and mentor, fighting against the very behavior I participated in. Through my actions I have lost my family, my career, trust in the community, trust of many friends and colleagues. My actions alone made me realize the impact this has had on the greater Kaukauna area, as well as many parents, or students I served. I will forever carry the burden of these families,” he said.
Maki resigned from the district on Sept. 8, school board minutes show.
According to the criminal complaint, Maki exchanged messages on Kik with a person identified as a 15-year-old girl, but was actually an undercover Wausau police officer. Hundreds of lines of text from multiple days are quoted in the criminal complaint.
