MARINETTE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A wild deer has tested positive for chronic wasting disease in Marinette County for the first time.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says a 3-year-old buck found near Peshtigo was humanely killed because of signs of illness.
Because of the positive test, state law requires the current baiting and feeding ban in Marinette County to be extended for three years. Existing baiting and feeding bans in neighboring counties are not affected.
CWD is a fatal, infectious disease that affects the nervous systems of deer, moose, elk and reindeer/caribou. It was first documented in Wisconsin in 2002.
