(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) CINCINNATI – Marquette generated a handful of early chances but could not find the breakthrough Friday night, falling 3-0 to No. 25 Xavier at Corcoran Field on Friday night. The Golden Eagles dropped to 6-4-1 overall and 0-3-0 in league play, while Xavier remained unbeaten at 7-0-2 overall and improved to 2-0-1 in conference action.
Marquette controlled much of the early play and recorded the first quality scoring opportunities of the match. Senior forward Mads Konrad Horgoien forced a save in the 13th minute before Antonio Costabile tested Xavier goalkeeper Jonny Mennell on another chance midway through the opening frame.
Xavier broke through in the 29th minute when Gun Ha Lee finished a chance off to put the Musketeers ahead 1-0 before halftime.
The hosts added to the advantage early in the second half as Ekene Okeke scored in the 51st minute. Xavier pushed the lead to 3-0 10 minutes when Johnny Gourley converted a chance created by Ha Lee.
Marquette continued to search for a response after the break. Freshman midfielder Enkido Hackaa, Emilio Maldonado Frei and Horgoien each put shots on target in the second half, but Mennell finished with five saves to preserve the shutout.
The Golden Eagles placed five of their seven shots on goal and held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks, but Xavier converted three goals on 14 shots and six shots on frame.
