APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Appleton police have been receiving multiple reports of belongings being stolen from vehicles over the last month and a half.
The Appleton Police Department says it has received reports of 28 thefts from vehicles, 15 vehicles that were rummaged through and 11 vehicles that were stolen since July 1.
According to a map the police department posted on social media, most of the thefts occurred on the city’s north side.
In order to prevent future incidents, the Appleton police listed several measures for citizens to take.
- Lock your vehicle every time, even when you’re parked at home or only stepping away for a few minutes.
- Remove valuables from your vehicle. Don’t leave wallets, purses, electronics, firearms, or other valuables inside.
- Keep the interior clear. Even items that aren’t valuable can attract attention and lead someone to check your vehicle.
- Take your keys with you and never leave your vehicle running and unattended.
- Park in a well-lit area. Utilize motion-activated lights, if possible.
- If you park in a garage, close the garage door.
Appleton police stress that these steps take very little time and can go a long way toward preventing an opportunity for theft.
