(WTAQ-WLUK) – The USS Fort Worth, a U.S. Navy ship built at Fincantieri Marinette Marine, was decommissioned Wednesday in a ceremony in San Diego.
Launched in 2010, the USS Fort Worth was one a series of littoral combat ships built in Marinette and Alabama to serve coastal areas.
However, due to a series of issues with the ships and changing priorities, the Navy has decommissioned several of the LCS in recent years.
“By retiring early-hull test platforms like Fort Worth, the Navy redirects investments toward upgrading the remaining LCS inventory with enhanced capabilities. This strategy sustains the LCS program and underscores the Navy’s commitment to building America’s Fleet of the Future, ensuring the active ships remain relevant, combat-credible, and reliable throughout their service lives,” a Navy news release said Wednesday.

The Navy moved to more heavily-armored frigates, and Landing Ship Mediums, which are also being built in Marinette.
