KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — School board members held a special closed-door meeting Thursday night to discuss the future of a Kaukauna teacher who is currently on administrative leave due to a social media post about the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner over the weekend.
Kaukauna High School social studies teacher Patrick Meyer made waves with widely-condemned comments about the assassination attempt on President Donald Trump.
His now-deleted X post read, “I am not impressed with recent presidential assassins. It’s [expletive] embarrassing! Booth, Guiteau, Czolgosz, Oswald must all be spinning in their graves! MAGAA (make Americans great assassins again)! Sad!”
Following two hours of discussion in closed session at a special school board meeting Thursday, no action was taken regarding whether or not to fire Meyer. Public comment was not allowed.
“There are no action items to vote on during this meeting,” said Board President Chris Bouressa when the board reconvened into open session. “This matter remains under review by district administration.”
Superintendent Mike Slowinski and all the school board members would not answer questions after the meeting. Slowinski said there is no timetable for a decision and the district needs to gather more information. On Monday, the district said it is taking additional action to review the matter in accordance with its policies and procedures.
At Monday’s board meeting, several parents spoke during public comment and called for Meyer to be terminated, while multiple students expressed their support for Meyer as a teacher.
