(ST. NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) PLYMOUTH – St. Norbert College fell behind in the first half and a late rally wasn’t enough as the Green Knights fell to Lakeland University 35-25 in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Taylor Field.
The Green Knights (5-5, 5-3 NACC) trailed the Muskies 28-3 at halftime and closed to within 11 points in the third quarter but Lakeland pushed the lead back to 18 points late in the period to retake control.
Lakeland took the game’s opening kickoff and scored a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. The Green Knights responded by marching downfield to set up a first-and-goal situation at the Muskies’ 1, but two rushes for no gain and a fumble on third down lead to a Tyler Juergensen 25-yard field goal. The Green Knights got a defensive stop but were pinned in their own end, leading to a Lakeland safety and a 9-3 lead. The Muskies doubled up with another touchdown four plays later for a 15-3 lead late in the first quarter.
Lakeland then scored a pair of second-quarter touchdowns, the latter coming as time expired, to take a 28-3 lead.
St. Norbert took advantage of a blocked punt to score a touchdown on a Jacob McVane (pictured) 2-yard run with 6:09 left in the third quarter. Following a Sean Gilles interception to set the Green Knights up at the Lakeland 5, McVane took it in from there on the next play to cut the deficit to 28-17 with 5:48 left in the period. Lakeland would respond with a touchdown of its own with 2:53 left to boost the lead to 35-17.
The Green Knights scored the fourth quarter’s only points when Fernando Rodriguez hit Bailey Turenne on a 30-yard touchdown pass with 4:56 left, and then connected on a two-point conversion.
Lakeland outgained St. Norbert 520-252. McVane had 193 rushing yards on 27 carries with two touchdowns.
MEN’S HOCKEY
FOND DU LAC – St. Norbert College picked up its second sweep in as many weeks after finishing a pair of wins in a home-and-home series with Marian University in a 6-2 win in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association action at Blue Line Family Ice Center.
The Green Knights (6-1, 4-0 NCHA), ranked No. 4 in the USCHO.com Division III Poll, head to No. 3-ranked Aurora University next weekend in a key early-season NCHA series.
St. Norbert took control with a pair of goals 2:10 apart in the second half of the first period. Logan Dombrowsky (pictured) got the Green Knights on the board with his fourth goal of the season, coming at 11:31. Braydon Beahm then scored at 13:41 for a 2-0 edge. The goal was Beahm’s seventh of the year, having scored one goal in each of his first seven college games.
The Green Knights scored a critical goal for a 3-0 lead at 15:15 of the second period when Braden Lindstrom scored his first goal of the season. Marian cashed in a power-play goal from Nolan Flint at 18:56 to cut the St. Norbert lead to 3-1 heading into second intermission.
St. Norbert regained its three-goal lead early in the third period on T.J. Koufis’ third goal of the season, scoring at 1:50. Blake Ulve scored his second goal of the season with a marker at 8:07 for a 5-1 lead. Marian got a power-play goal from Eemil Rautio at 11:43. Ethan Byrne closed out the scoring by potting his third goal of the season with an empty-net marker at 18:20.
Dombrowsky, Beahm, Lindstrom and Ulve all scored one goal and one assist for two points. Jack Christen and Ryan Gingher each had two assists for two points. Christen finished the game at +4, while Mark Snarr and Bryan Gilman were both +3.
St. Norbert outshot Marian 38-19. Hunter Garvey made 17 saves for the Green Knights, while Andreai Proctor-Ramirez made 32 stops for the Sabres.
The Green Knights were 0-for-3 on the power play, while Marin was 2-for-6.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
DE PERE – St. Norbert College fell 2-1 to Marian University in overtime in a Northern Collegiate Hockey League game at Resch Olympic Pavilion.
The Green Knights (4-2, 3-1 NCHA), ranked No. 6 in the USCHO.com Division III poll, struggled to find the net early for the second straight game against the Sabres, not being able to connect for a goal until the third period with just a few minutes remaining in regulation.
After conceding a power-play goal at 9:22 in the second period, the Green Knights scored with under three minutes remaining in the third period, when Maddie Madden scored following immense pressure on the Marian goal. Ali Sanders (pictured) and Grace Wittkopf provided the assists to send the game into overtime.
It didn’t take long for the extra period to come to an end, as the Sabres scored on their first attempt just 30 seconds in.
St. Norbert outshot Marian 38-23. Tanith Plachetka made 21 saves for the Green Knights, while Jillian Traver made 37 stops for Marian.
The Green Knights were 0-for-4 on the power play. Marian went 1-for-3.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
COLFAX – St. Norbert College recorded its best regional showing since 2009 at the NCAA Division III North Regional, ran at Whitetail Golf Course. The Green Knights placed 15th of 31 teams and recorded the second lowest point total in school history with 390.
The team title was rewarded to UW-La Crosse who earned 30 points, while UW-Stevens Point came in second with 110 points. Mohammed Bati of Augsburg University won the 8-kilometer race in 24:23.7.
Lars Huffman led St. Norbert with a 53rd-place finish in 26:04.3.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
St. Norbert College turned in a 19th-place finish out of 30 teams at the NCAA Division III North Regional, held at Whitetail Golf Course.
The Green Knights earned 430 points. The team title went to UW-La Crosse with 45 points, while Carleton College secured runner-up honors with 71 points. Hannah Preisser of Carleton claimed the individual title of the 6-kilometer race in 21:40.2.
Kayla Wesaw led St. Norbert with a 64th-place finish in 23:51.8.
