DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The DNR approved a proposal to build a 100-seat amphitheater and add other amenities at Newport State Park.
The development would be placed in the “day use” area, near the east side of the park, along Newport Bay in Door County.
Other plans include a storage shed, a low wall to block light pollution from the parking lot, an observation deck, and boardwalk and/or gravel/paved paths to connect new and existing facilities.
The proposed development also includes adding electricity to the site, preferably via installation of a solar array and battery. Primary use of the electricity would be for use in interpretive programming, temporary lighting of foot paths at the end of evening events, and charging of equipment (e.g., tracked wheelchair).
Located near the tip of the Door County Peninsula, Newport State Park is known for its scenic beauty. At the far end of the Door Peninsula, Newport is also designated as a Dark Sky Park. The park received its “dark sky” designation in 2017, noting the ability to observe the stars with minimal light pollution. It’s one of the darkest spots in the state.
