FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A man who was in the United States illegally was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison for trying to kill his wife with a knife.
Fermin Teodoro Lopez-Mendoza, 51, was also placed on extended supervision for 10 years by Judge Andrew Christenson after being convicted of attempted homicide.
Lopez-Mendoza is expected to be deported after serving his sentence, according to District Attorney Eric Toney.
“If you commit acts of domestic violence or illegally enter the United States this sentence should put you on notice that there will be consequences for your crimes and you will be aggressively prosecuted to protect our communities and end domestic violence,” Toney said in a statement.
According to the criminal complaint, on March 22, 2024, officers were dispatched to a home on County Road K for a report of a woman who had been stabbed.
When police arrived, a witness said Lopez-Mendoza had stabbed the victim with a knife after the couple was having an argument about Lopez-Mendoza moving out.
After the stabbing, the witness said Lopez-Mendoza got into a vehicle and drove off. As Lopez-Mendoz drove off, the witness threw a hammer at the vehicle, striking the back window, causing it to shatter.
The woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. She also suffered internal bleeding as her liver was punctured from one of the stab wounds, the complaint states.
Authorities were able to track Lopez-Mendoza to a residence in Ozaukee County where he was arrested. His vehicle was located in rural Calumet County and seized as evidence.
