After a very, very long road trip to start the season in Brazil, the Packers can really settle into a routine with 8 consecutive Sunday afternoon games, six of them kicking off at high noon. A couple of things stand out when it comes to the NFC North rivalries. The Packers will face only one division opponent in the first two months, hosting the Vikings in week 4. They’ll sandwich the Lions and Bears games around the week 10 bye in the first half of November. The other significant divisional schedule note comes as a result of the Packers having 9 home games in year three of a 17 game season. The Packers are splitting up the season tickets with the same 6 games for the Green package and giving the Gold package three, instead of two games. However, for the very first time, the Green package season ticket holders will not see an NFC opponent at Lambeau. All three home games, against the Vikes in September, the Lions in November and the Bears in the regular season finale in January, belong to the Gold package ticket holders. That’s not sitting well with the Green folks.
Young quarterbacks will test their skills against Jordan Love early in the season. Anthony Richardson coming off a bad injury will lead the Colts into Lambeau for the home opener, they’ll likely see J.J. McCarthy and Minnesota in the second home game, C.J. Stroud, off his fantastic rookie season will bring the Texans into Green Bay in October. They’ll get two cracks at Caleb Williams, the Bears number one overall pick, after the bye.
Get ready for a holiday light display. Back when they were just getting started, the Packers hosted games on Thanksgiving Day to pass the hat and raise some money to keep the team afloat, hosting the Stambaugh Miners in 1920, the Duluth Kelleys in 1922 and the Hammond Pros in 1923. (They won all three and didn’t surrender a single point). The last time they played at Lambeau on the holiday was in 2015, hosting, and beating the Chicago Bears. This year, the Miami Dolphins are coming to town for the prime time Thanksgiving show and that will start a run of four consecutive holiday season shows under the lights. The rematch with Detroit on the subsequent Thursday night, a Sunday night date in Seattle and their only Monday night appearance against New Orleans two days before Christmas. Those Detroit and Seattle games are the only back to back road games for the Pack this year.
The final five games are all against NFC opposition which could be very significant if the Packers find themselves in the post-season hunt.
Green Bay will play seven games against teams that made the playoffs a year ago, two with Detroit, the team that eliminated them in San Francisco, Philly, L.A., Houston and Miami.
For TV viewers, 8 games will be carried on the Fox Network, the Colts, Titans, Cardinals, Jaguars, Lions, Bears, 49ers and Vikings. CBS will have the back to back games at Minnesota and Los Angeles early, NBC gets the Turkey night game and the trip to Seattle. ESPN handles the Monday nighter against New Orleans and the streamers have a pair, the Brazilian opener will be on peacock and the Thursday night trip to Detroit in December will be on prime video.
Now we’ve got four months to get primed for the 2024 campaign.
