It was a quiet night with a noisy finish for the Milwaukee Brewers as they dropped their third straight game, 1-0 in a series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays, dropping Milwaukee into second place in the NL Central at 17-11. The only run of the game came across in the top of the first inning. Brewer starter Bryse Wilson loaded up the bases and then got a double play ground out that allowed the run to score. Wilson would settle in and get through six innings, allowing just the one run on 4 hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts. Three relievers were also able to keep the Rays off the board. However, Tampa starter Ryan Pepiot and three relievers combined on a three hit shoutout with 12 strikeouts. Milwaukee had their chance with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning. Blake Perkins was at the plate when he swung and missed at a low breaking ball that got away from the Tampa catcher. Perkins’ bat clunked the helmet of the catcher before he ran to first when the ball got away and Sal Frelick raced home from third for what appeared to be the tying run. Umpires called batter interference on Perkins, sending him back to the plate and Frelick back to third. Manager Pat Murphy argued vehemently and was ejected from the ballgame. The Brewers now trail Chicago by a half game in the division race and they’ll send Freddy Peralta to the mound against Tyler Alexander of the Rays. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:05 PM with a 6:40 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
