The Milwaukee Brewers had to pick their new ace to earn a split in the four game series with the Pirates in Pittsburgh, winning 7-5 Thursday afternoon at PNC Park. Freddy Peralta entered the game 2-0 with a 1.90 ERA as the new front man in the rotation but he scuffled, hanging on into the 5th inning with fives wild, giving up 5 runs on 5 hits with 5 walks and 5 strikeouts. After William Contreras hit his 5th home of the year, a solo shot in the first that staked Peralta to a lead, Freddy gave it back and then some as Joey Bart cracked a three run blast in the bottom of the first inning. It became a back and forth game as Rhys Hoskins delivered a pair of RBI’s to put Milwaukee up 4-3 only to see the Pirates plate two in the 5th to go back on top. It stayed 5-4 Pittsburgh until the 8th when Gary Sanchez hit a pinch hit, two run homer off Aroldis Chapman in the top of the 8th inning. Oliver Dunn added an insurance RBI singe in the 9th and the bullpen allowed just three hits over the final four innings to finish a strong week. The Brewers went 5-2 on the division trip through St. Louis and Pittsburgh and return home leading the NL Central at 15-8 and they’ll welcome the New York Yankees to American Family Field for a weekend series. Colin Rea gets the call in the opener Friday night. Pre-game coverage gets underway at 6:35 Pm with a 7:10 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
