What goes around, comes around. A year ago, the Wisconsin Badgers women hockey team won it’s 7th NCAA championship with a heart stopping 1-0 victory over Ohio State. Sunday night in Durham, New Hampshire, it was a heartbreaking loss as the Buckeyes beat the Badgers 1-0 for their second title in school history. Joy Dunne fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of freshman goalie Ava McNaughton with 7:12 left in the final period for the only tally of the game. The Badgers had a couple of quality scoring chances earlier in the third period but couldn’t convert. Wisconsin finishes the season 35-6 and unfortunately, second best.
The Wisconsin men’s team, off since a first round exit in the Big Ten tournament, dropping the best of three series to Ohio State back on March 10, still earned a number two seed in the Providence Regional in the NCAA Men’s Division 1 tournament. The Badgers (26-11-2) will face defending national champion Quinnipiac in the regional semifinal. Boston College, the number one overall seed in the field will open against Michigan Tech. The regional winner will head to the NCAA Frozen Four at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota April 11-13.
