GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Some Green Bay middle schoolers engaged in “disruption and inappropriate behaviors” during a student-led walkout Wednesday, according to district officials.
In a statement, the Green Bay Area Public School District and Edison Middle School apologized to businesses and residents in the area, saying the students’ actions “do not reflect the values of our school community.”
GBAPS emphasized that most of the students who participated in the walkout did so peacefully throughout the neighborhood and on the school track and only a “small number” behaved poorly.
We understand the frustration and concern this caused and regret the impact on those affected.
We remain committed to reinforcing expectations for respectful behavior and maintaining positive relationships with our community partners and neighbors.
Officials say the district is working with school resource officers and the Green Bay Police Department to review the situation and “determine any appropriate law enforcement response.”
The walkout was organized and carried out fully by students, GBAPS said. Students who were absent from class without authorization from a parent or guardian may face school-based consequences in accordance with the district’s attendance policies.
