(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) – CANCUN, MEXICO – The Green Bay women’s basketball team fell in their first game at the Cancun Challenge to #25 NC State, 79-67. Gracie Grzesk finished the game with a career-high 23 points.
Besides Grzesk, two other Phoenix finished in double figures. Jenna Guyer tacked on 15 points off the bench, and Carley Duffney chipped in as well with 10 points and four assists.
The Green Bay offense was strong from three, making 10 threes on 27 attempts. Grzesk hit five treys for the Phoenix in the contest. NC State shot 7-of-18 from deep.
The Wolfpack also had three players score in double figures, led by Zoe Brooks with 21 points. Zamareya Jones had 17 points, while Khamil Pierre had 12 points and 21 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two teams traded baskets for the game’s first seven minutes. In the first quarter’s final three minutes, NC State outscored GB 12-4 and took a 22-14 lead at the end of the frame.
NC State kept adding to that lead, building a 35-23 advantage before Green Bay went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Skorupski, to narrow its deficit to 35-31. NC State added one point before the half and led 36-31 going into the break.
NC State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 40-34 advantage before Green Bay went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Grzesk, to grab a 43-40 lead with 6:01 to go in the third. The Wolfpack battled back and grabbed a 56-52 lead by the end of the third.
NC State went up 58-52 before Green Bay went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Grzesk’s three, to shrink the deficit to 58-57 with 8:16 to go in the contest. However, NC State responded and outscored Green Bay 21-10 the rest of the way to take it 79-67.
GAME NOTES
» The Phoenix shared the ball well, recording an assist on 68 percent of made field goals.
» The Green Bay defense forced 13 turnovers, while turning the ball over only eight times themselves.
» NC State outrebounded Green Bay 49-30.
