(UW ATHLETICS) ANN ARBOR, MICH – A back-and-forth game that finished with two Wolverine empty-netters proved to be the No. 10/9 Wisconsin men’s hockey team’s first loss of the year, a 7-4 setback at the No. 2 Michigan Wolverines on Friday night at Yost Ice Arena.
Michigan (10-1-0, 3-0-0 Big Ten – 8 points) opened the scoring 7:50 into the first period. Wisconsin (6-1-2, 2-1-0 Big Ten – 6 points) responded in the opening five minutes of the second frame, with Luke Osburn and Gavin Morrissey scoring at 2:35 and 4:39 into the frame, respectively, to give UW a 2-1 lead. Michigan struck twice in the second, once at 10:33 and again at 14:24 into the frame, to take a one-goal lead into the third period.
To tie the contest at three, Simon Tassy scored on a power-play deflection 9:57 into the third frame, before Ryan Botterill lit the lamp from his knees at 10:42 to restore the Badgers’ lead. Just over 30 seconds later, at 11:18 into the third, Michigan tied the game, before taking a 5-4 lead 16:16 into the period. Two empty-net goals from the Wolverines in the final two minutes of the game sealed a 7-4 victory for UM.
How it Happened
Michigan’s Garrett Schifsky got on the board first, 7:50 into the first period.
Wisconsin responded 2:35 into the second frame, as freshman defenseman Osburn scored his second goal of the year.
Sophomore forward Morrissey made it 2-1, Wisconsin, with an unassisted tally 4:39 into the second.
Malcolm Spence tied the game at two for the Wolverines at 10:33 into the second, before Josh Eernisse gave UM a one-goal advantage, 14:24 into the middle frame.
The Badgers tied the game again, 9:57 into the third, with senior forward Tassy’s fifth goal of the year on the power play.
Less than a minute later, at 10:42 into the third, sophomore forward Botterill scored UW’s fourth goal of the night to make it 4-3, Wisconsin.
At 11:18 into the third, Michael Hage tied the game for UM to kick off four straight Michigan goals. The Wolverines took a 5-4 lead, 16:16 into the third, before finding the empty net twice in the final two minutes to take a 7-4 victory.
Wisconsin went 1-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. UW finished the contest with a 24-33 deficit in shots on goal.
