(UW ATHLETICS) – MADISON — The No. 1 Wisconsin women’s hockey team shutout Minnesota State Mankato 8-0 during game two of the home series this Sunday. Eight Badgers scored once to shutout the Mavericks and earn Wisconsin its fifth straight series sweep.
Hannah Halverson scored her first goal of the season after receiving the puck from captain Caroline Harvey. The sophomore forward celebrated her birthday by giving Wisconsin its first score on the board.
Minutes later, alternate captain Lacey Eden tipped one in for Wisconsin and scored her seventh goal of the season, putting the Badgers up 2-0. Junior alternate captain Kelly Gorbatenko found the back of the net with 8:06 remaining in the first, collecting her fourth goal in the last three games.
A trio of Badgers found themselves in front of Mankato’s net to close out the first period of play. Maggie Scanell and Gorbatenko passed the puck back and forth to Cassie Hall, before Hall ultimately scored for Wisconsin. The scoreboard read 4-0 when the clock struck zero. Hall’s goal was her 10th in 10 games played.
Senior Claire Enright scored first for the Badgers during the second period and brought Wisconsin up 5-0. Scannell collected her fifth goal of the season after receiving the puck from Gorbatenko with 10:11 remaining in the second period.

Freshman goaltender Rhyah Stewart entered the net with 14:33 remaining in the final period. Stewart has now played in two games for Wisconsin.
Freshman Adéla Šapovalivová tallied her second goal of the series at the start of the third period, making the Badgers 7-0. Soon after, sophomore Finley McCarthy found the back of the net after receiving a pass from senior Vivian Jungels. This was McCarthy’s first goal of the season, making the final score 8-0.

Wisconsin has only let in six goals through the team’s first 10 games. In program history, only the 2015-16 team let in fewer goals during the team’s first 10 games.

This is the third season in a row in which the Badgers opened their season 10-0-0, and the fourth time in the last five seasons.
