(BREWERS) – Major League Baseball announced that Sal Frelick has been named the Brewers 2025 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, presented by Capital One, one of baseball’s most prestigious individual honors acknowledging community and philanthropic commitment. This is Frelick’s first time receiving the honor.
The Roberto Clemente Award, presented by Capital One, is the annual recognition of a player from each MLB Club who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. As part of the annual program, each MLB Club nominates one player to be considered for the league-wide Award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character.
Yesterday, Monday, September 15, marked Roberto Clemente Day presented by Capital One, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente’s legacy and to formally acknowledge Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award.
Today, Tuesday, September 16, the Brewers will honor Frelick as the Roberto Clemente Award nominee and gift him a nominee award before the Crew takes on the Los Angeles Angels. In addition, three winners of the Roberto Clemente art contest will be recognized on field with the first-place winner throwing out a ceremonial first pitch. As part of the league-wide celebration, the Roberto Clemente Day logo will appear on the bases and official dugout lineup cards and a customized tribute video to Roberto will be shown in all MLB ballparks as well as on MLB Network, MLB.com, Club sites and MLB Social Media Platforms.
As the Brewers take on the Los Angeles Angels at American Family Field, Brewers players and coaching staff will wear a #21 tribute patch. In addition, Frelick will wear #21 on his uniform, as will Jackson Chourio, Andruw Monasterio, Christian Yelich, William Contreras, Andrew Vaughn, Joel Payamps, Julio Borbón, Abner Uribe, Freddy Peralta, José Quintana, Daniel de Mondesert, Christian Correra and Néstor Corredor.
The league-wide winner of the Roberto Clemente Award, presented by Capital One, will be honored at the 2025 World Series following selection by a blue-ribbon panel. This panel includes representatives from the Commissioner’s Office, Capital One, MLB-affiliated networks (MLB Network, FOX Sports, ESPN and TBS), MLB.com, the National Baseball Hall of Fame, as well as Roberto’s children, Enrique, Luis and Roberto Clemente, Jr. Fans can vote for the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One via MLBTogether.com/ClementeAward (in both English and Spanish). The site, which will feature bios of each of the nominees, allows fans to vote until the end of the regular season on Sunday, September 28th. The winner of the fan vote will count as one vote among those cast by the blue-ribbon panel.
The concept of honoring Major League players for their philanthropic work was created in 1971 as the “Commissioner’s Award.” The recognition was renamed to the “Roberto Clemente Award” in 1973 tribute to Clemente following his passing.
Frelick has been committed to making an impact within the Milwaukee community through his exceptional character, dedication to community service and unwavering commitment to philanthropy. Frelick continues his long-standing support for Best Buddies, a nonprofit organization promoting inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. His involvement reflects a personal commitment that began in high school and has grown through his professional career.
As part of the Sargento Double Helping for Hunger campaign, Frelick has joined forces with Hunger Task Force, Sargento and Brewers Community Foundation to combat childhood hunger. At the Summer Sizzle event at Merrill Park, Frelick helped serve free, nutritious meals to more than 100 local children, distributed Brewers-themed swag and participated in games and activities.
Additionally, Frelick recently reunited with the 2025 Aurora Health Care® All-Stars for a special visit outside American Family Field. The children, all experiencing health challenges, first met Frelick during Spring Training, and his continued involvement highlights the team’s commitment to creating meaningful experiences for young fans.
