OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An innovative aircraft that offers a glimpse into the future of pilot-free air taxis is now part of the EAA Aviation Museum’s collection.
Wisk’s Gen 5 aircraft — affectionately known as “Cora” — is an electric-powered taxi-yellow model that can hover like a helicopter before flying away like an airplane, all without a pilot.
“The Wisk aircraft are unique in that they’re autonomous. There’s no pilot on board. There’s no cockpit inside this aircraft,” said Kacy Anderson, senior manager of the flight test department at Wisk Aero. “It is flown on pre-programmed flight routes with a pilot monitoring the aircraft flight. The pilot can intervene if there are emergencies, but otherwise the aircraft conducts the flight on its own.”
Cora made its first public flight at EAA AirVenture 2023. It was the world’s inaugural demonstration of a fully autonomous eVTOL fixed-wing aircraft.
“To bring it back and have it retired to the museum here at EAA is pretty special for us,” Anderson said.
I’ve been coming to AirVenture for 30 years. I started coming here just after one year old. So, to be walking through this museum as a kid and then now bringing back a plane that I’ve worked on, is a really cool, full circle moment for me.
Wisk is currently partnering with Boeing on its Generation 6 aircraft. The hope is that their all-electric passenger aircraft might be the first ever authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Manufacturers say it’s part of their mission to make air travel as easy as calling an Uber.
