(LEARFIELD) – The Green Bay Packers continue preparations Friday for Sunday’s NFL season opener at Lambeau Field against the Detroit Lions.
Packers offensive lineman Zach Tom knows that one key to Packers success will be controlling Lions defensive end Aiden Hutchinson.
Tom talked about whether Hutchinson will be the best defensive lineman they’ll face.
Where does he expect Hutchinson to line up on Sunday?
How will the team deal with Hutchinson?
Getting rolling early: The Green Bay Packers with running back Josh Jacobs had a very successful running attack last season. Looking ahead, Jacobs spoke about the goals for this season.
Jacobs said that it’s important to get everybody on the same page.
He said that this opener against the Lions will be a challenge.
And with it being a divisional opponent it’s a big game right off the bat.
Packers sign Whelan to extension: The Green Bay Packers have signed punter Daniel Whelan to a contract extension. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transaction Thursday.
Whelan, who was signed by the Packers in May 2023, has played in 34 regular-season games and three postseason contests for Green Bay over the past two seasons. He has registered two of the top three single-season averages for punting in franchise history, posting a 46.2-yard average in 2023 (No. 2) and a 46.1-yard mark in 2024 (No. 3). Among players with 100-plus punts, Whelan has posted the top career punting average (46.2) and the top net punting average (40.0) in team history. In 2024, he became the first punter in team history to average 46-plus yards per punt and 40-plus net yards per punt in a single season.
Whelan, a native of Ireland, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints in May 2022 before being released by the Saints in late July that year. He played for the D.C. Defenders in 2023, earning All-XFL honors after ranking No. 3 in the league in both punting average (45.6) and punts inside the 20 (11). Whelan finished his career at University of California, Davis (2017-21) ranked No. 1 in school history in punting average (44.0) and punts inside the 20 (86).
