GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin made a stop in Green Bay Tuesday to discuss the need for increased shipbuilding in the United States.
Baldwin, a Democrat, toured Fincantieri Ace Marine in Green Bay as part of her statewide “Fighting for Wisconsin Families Tour.”
She said more shipbuilding in America is key to countering China’s dominance in the industry and supporting good-paying jobs.
“The folks gathered here today — whether it’s elected officials like myself, business leaders like Fincantieri Ace Marine, labor leaders and of course, workers — we represent a great cross-section of who’s invested in Wisconsin’s shipbuilding industry. If this manufacturing is shipped overseas, these are the folks who are going to pay the price,” Baldwin said. “When trade cheats like China get away with skirting the rules, it’s our folks on factory floors and their families and the entire local economy that feel the pain.”
Over the last two decades, by employing anti-competitive tactics, China now leads the world in commercial shipbuilding and dominates our global transportation supply chain. Last year, China built 1,700 commercial vessels. The United States built fewer than 10.
Earlier this month, Baldwin visited Hinterland Brewery in Green Bay as part of her Fighting for Wisconsin Families Tour. There, she talked with area business owners about the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
