(GREEN BAY COMMUNICATIONS) GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay men’s soccer team opened the 2025 season against Northern Illinois at Aldo Santaga Stadium Monday night, falling 1-0. The game was neck-and-neck for most of the game before NIU scored the game’s winning goal in the 85th minute.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams battled in the first half, with both teams threatening the other’s goal. Chris Album nearly broke the deadlock in the 12th minute after nearly catching the Huskies’ goalie out from around the halfway line. Album’s shot beat the goalie, but not the crossbar. NIU had its best chance in the 28th minute, when Jose Gomez took a free kick just outside the box that rattled off the Phoenix post.
Neither team threatened the other team’s goal until deep in the contest, when NIU pulled in front thanks to a Vance Sheffield header in the 85th minute. Sheffield capitalized on a right-sided cross from Gomez.
GAME NOTES
- NIU slightly outshot GB 14-10 and 6-2 in shots on goal.
- Philip Oesterbaek started in goal for the Phoenix and had five saves.
- GB had four corner kicks to NIU’s two.
