MERRILL, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Rian Nyblom was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison for his role in the death of a counselor at a state youth prison.
Nyblom, 18, was previously convicted of two counts of battery by a prisoner in connection with the June 24, 2024 death of Corey Proulx at Lincoln-Hills-Copper Lake Schools.
He was also placed on extended supervision for five years by Lincoln County Judge Galen Bayne-Allison, court records show.
Javarius Hurd, 17, is charged with first-degree reckless homicide for the incident. He is scheduled to stand trial Feb. 2.
According to prosecutors, Hurd was upset at a female counselor whom he felt was abusing her power threw soap at her, punched her and then punched Proulx, who fell and hit his head on the pavement. He later died.
Prosecutors allege that Nyblom gave Hurd the soap he allegedly threw at the female counselor, and that Nyblom knew Hurd was upset with her and wanted to attack her, according to a criminal complaint.
