(LEARFIELD/BREWERS) – The Milwaukee Brewers did make one final trade before Thursday’s deadline.
They sent pitcher Nestor Cortes to the San Diego Padres and received outfielder Brandon Lockridge.
They also picked up pitchers Shelby Miller and Jordan Montgomery from Arizona.
Miller, 34, is 3-3 with a 1.98 ERA (36.1ip, 8er) and 10 saves in 37 relief appearances for Arizona this season. He ranks ninth among National League relievers in ERA and has held opponents to a .190 batting average. Miller made Arizona’s Opening Day roster after being a non-roster invitee to Major League camp. He is currently on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain.
Miller has posted a 4.03 ERA in 291 appearances (133 starts) over 13 seasons in the Major Leagues with St. Louis (2012-14), Atlanta (2015), Arizona (2016-18, 2025), Texas (2019), Chicago-NL (2021), Pittsburgh (2021), San Francisco (2022), Los Angeles-NL (2023) and Detroit (2024). He was a National League All-Star in 2015, notching a 3.02 ERA in 33 starts with the Braves.
Montgomery, 32, has pitched parts of eight seasons in the Major Leagues with New York-AL (2017-22), St. Louis (2022-23), Texas (2023) and Arizona (2024). He underwent “Tommy John” surgery in April and is expected to miss the entire 2025 season. Montgomery signed a one-year contract with a vesting option with the Diamondbacks prior to 2024 and will be a free agent after this season.
Lockridge put up impressive numbers in Triple-A, but was hitting only .216 for San Diego. He will be sent to Triple-A Nashville.
Lockridge, 28, has split the 2025 season between San Diego and Triple-A El Paso, appearing in 47 games for the Padres. In 21 games at El Paso, Lockridge batted .291/.408/.468 with 2 HR, 6 RBI and 7 SB.
Lockridge tied for third in all of Triple-A in stolen bases with 46 in 104 games in 2024 between Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (72g) and El Paso (32g), batting .306/.410/.397 with 3 HR and 28 RBI. He was was acquired by San Diego from New York-AL in exchange for right-handed pitchers Enyel De Los Santos and Thomas Balboni on July 30, 2024 and made his Major League debut for the Padres on September 13, 2024.
Outfielder Jackson Chourio, according to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy is liked headed to the 10-day injured list after hurting his hamstring in a game against the Cubs on Tuesday. The Brewers are waiting on test results to see if a trip the injured list is needed.
The Brewers return to action tonight with Jose Quintana starting the first game of a weekend series against the Nationals in Washington. Southpaw Mitchell Parker will start for the Nationals.
