KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A house fire Wednesday that displaced a family in Kaukauna was sparked by a clothes dryer, according to authorities.
Just after 1 p.m., the Kaukauna Fire Department responded to 520 Diedrich Street for a report of black smoke throughout the residence. Although no flames were visible from the exterior when crews arrived, smoke could be seen exiting the home through the open front entry door.
All occupants had safely evacuated the house when firefighters got to the scene, but the family’s cat remained inside. Firefighters recovered the cat after the fire was extinguished and reunited the pet with its owners.
Officials say the clothes dryer in the basement caught fire and spread to surrounding contents. Fire damage was contained to the immediate area; however, extensive smoke damage affected the entire home. Initial damage is estimated at $15,000.
Residents were displaced as a result of the fire. Its cause is still being investigated by the Kaukauna Fire Department.
