(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) – A pair of Marquette men’s soccer players were honored by the BIG EAST for the opening week of men’s soccer play, following a 2-0-0 showing which included a 2-0 win over Drexel and a 6-1 victory over Marist.
First-year junior midfielder Mitchell Dryden was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week for his performances in both matches against Drexel and Marist. Dryden scored one goal against Drexel in the 27th minute in his debut as a Golden Eagle. Dryden followed Thursday’s performance with a massive two-goal brace and one assist vs Marist on Sunday at Valley Fields. The Whitefish Bay native is the first player to record a brace for Golden Eagles this season.
Freshmen goalkeeper Marten Brink was named the league’s Goalkeeper of the Week for his performances in both matches against Drexel and Marist. Brink recorded a clean sheet in his career debut vs Drexel notching six saves. Against Marist, Brink recorded three saves, only allowing one goal coming off a penalty kick. The 6’7 Stukenbrock, Germany native has faced 11 shots only allowing one goal.
BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week
Mitchell Dryden, Marquette, Jr., M (Whitefish Bay, Wis.)
Leading all BIG EAST scorers through the opening weekend, Dryden tallied a trio of goals and dished out an assist to lead the Golden Eagles to a perfect 2-0 week. In the season opening 2-0 win over Drexel, Dryden put the game away with his first goal in a Marquette uniform. The junior transfer followed it up with a brace and an assist in a 6-1 victory over Marist on Sunday.
BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week
Marten Brink, Marquette, Fr., GK (Stukenbrock, Germany)
Making his collegiate debut Thursday night, Brink led Marquette with a stellar six save shut out performance. On Sunday, the freshman collected three saves in a 6-1 triumph, with the lone goal registered on a penalty kick. Overall, Brink led all BIG EAST goalies with nine saves over the weekend, while facing 20 shots in 180 minutes of action.
