SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Deer Hunt 2023 is less then two weeks away, but people are getting ready for the nine-day campaign, and that includes heading to the shooting range to get those firearms “dialed in.”
“Getting ready for deer season. Got to get the gun sighted in,” said Steve Lasecki, Green Bay,
Deer Hunter Steve Lasecki only needed a few shots to get dialed in.
“You don’t want to harm the animal. You do want to make a good kill to it. And you also don’t want to waste the shells. They’re 50 cents apiece or more. You want to make sure you’re sighted in,” he said.
Lasecki was part of a steady stream of hunters at the Brown County Rifle Range in Suamico, Friday morning. Brown County Parks Department Program and Natural Resource Manager Jason Petrella says the facility features 10 lanes. Target distance ranges from 25 to 100 yards.
“We have staff manning out here, helping them through pretty much every step of the process to get their scope sighted in. Help them open sights. Any questions they have. Just firing techniques, even some other stuff, like different calibers,” said Jason Petrella, Brown County Parks Department Program and Natural Resource Manager.
“It definitely helps out with the safety aspects. People don’t have to walk down range to change targets and worry about other shooters on the firing line. So we spot you right up in the booth. So it’s a very safe environment,” he said.
Petrella says the site is more than just a rifle range.
“A lot of people come here. They love to talk about hunting stories. They’ll talk to other people shooting out here. They talk to staff out here. We’ll share hunting stories and stuff. So it’s a good kind of camaraderie that we get going with deer hunters,” he said.
Hunters like Steve Lasecki. He’s dialed in, and heading north for opening day.
“It’s always a good time. It’s more about getting together with family and friends, and deer hunting itself. Deer hunting’s a plus, but family and friends is the best,” he said.
A shooting session costs $7.
The Brown County Rifle Range is open daily through November 16th.
On November 11th, veterans shoot for free.
