SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Beginning next school year, the Howard-Suamico School District (HSSD) will have a new superintendent for the first time in nearly two decades.
Superintendent Damian LaCroix’s retirement was accepted during Monday night’s Board of Education meeting. He will retire at the completion of the 2023-24 school year after 19 years as HSSD superintendent.
Unanimously selected to replace LaCroix was Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mark Smith, who will begin his new role effective July 1, 2024.
A full announcement of the changes written by School Board President Greg Klimek was sent to staff, students, and families after Monday’s meeting.
“Superintendent LaCroix’s focus has been on the safety, achievement, and well-being of each and every student. His guidance has led us towards a culture of compassion and continuous improvement; fostering a caring learning community where leadership, learning, and growth are at the forefront of all we do,” reads the statement, in part.
Smith began his tenure at HSSD in 2016 before being appointed as Deputy Superintendent in 2019.
Prior to that, he worked in the Green Bay Public School District as a teacher, coach, principal and in a number of executive leadership positions.
