The Wisconsin high school athletic year is wrapping up with all of the spring sports ready to crown WIAA state champions. The Boys state tennis tournament in Madison and the State Track and Field meet in LaCrosse are taking place this week. Girls Softball is headed to Sectional Finals after semifinal games were played on Tuesday afternoon. In Division 1, two time defending champion Kaukauna ran it’s winning streak to 48 straight games with a 5-0 win over Ashwaubenon. The top seeded and top ranked Ghosts will get number two seed Preble for the trip to state. The Hornets defeated Pulaski 11-1 in six innings. Oshkosh West advanced to a sectional final in the valley with a 3-0 victory over Neenah. In Division 2, Freedom defeated Marinette 3-2 in 10 innings and will now face Waupun in the final. New London edged Medford 2-1 in 11 innings and will need to get by Rice Lake for a trip to state. Peshtigo will face Mishicot in a Division 3 final after the Bulldogs beat Amherst 4-0 while Mishicot advanced with a 7-5 victory over New Holstein. In Division 4, Algoma knocked out St. Mary Catholic 5-2 and the Wolves will face Iola-Scandanavia, a 9-6 winner over Bonduel.
The Girls State Soccer tournament has kicked off with Regional openers. De Pere defeated Preble 2-0 and will face Appleton North a 3-0 winner over Appleton West in Saturday’s regional final. Kimberly, Bay Port, West DePere, Kaukauna, Pulaski, Menasha and New London also won opening round games Tuesday night.
As for the boys, the State Baseball Tournament is underway. De Pere rolled Southwest 10-0 in five innings to advance. Bay Port defeated Appleton West 6-3, Ashwaubenon got by Green Bay East/West 3-0, Appleton East eliminated Pulaski 7-5, Appleton North whipped Preble 11-1, West De Pere defeated Kaukauna 11-6. Division 2 games had Denmark beat Luxemburg-Casco 6-5, Wrightstown is next for the Vikings, a 4-1 winner over Clintonville. Notre Dame beat Freedom 9-8 and Little Chute got by Shawano 8-0.
Finally, the field is nearly complete for next week’s Boys State Golf Tournament. In the Division 1 sectional at Thornberry Creek, West De Pere took the team title with a score of 306, Kimberly finished second at 317. Mason Haupt of the Phantoms was medalist with an outstanding, 4 under par 68, good for a five shot victory over teammate Ethan Heck at 73. Jack Weisenberger of De Pere at 74 and Thomas Bobinski of Notre Dame with a 75, qualified for state as individuals. At the Division 2 meet at Hilly Haven, Winneconne took the sectional title at 310 followed by Berlin at 324. A pair of freshmen were atop the leaderboard with Seymour’s Vince Sigl earning medalist at 2 over 74 and Parker Groff of Winneconne at 75. The Boys State tournament takes place at University Ridge in Madison next Monday and Tuesday.
