Man Charged with Killing Parents in Winnebago County

OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Erik Metzig was charged Tuesday with the murders of his parents Saturday at their Wolf River home.

Metzig, 25, was charged with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide for the deaths of David Metzig, 72, and Jan Metzig, 71. He appeared in court Tuesday afternoon, when bond was set at $1 million.

Police were called to the home around 5:15 a.m. Saturday, where the dead couple was discovered. Police found the bodies in the bedroom, covered in blankets, with apparent gunshot wounds to the head, the complaint states.

No specific motive is stated in the complaint, however, “a journal was found in Erik Metzig’s bedroom detailing that he wanted to eliminate his parents and make it look like they went missing while out for a walk.”

Metzig was later arrested at the Heart of the Valley YMCA. Police found red smears in his vehicle, which could have been blood, the complaint states.

According to their obituary, David and Jan Metzig were third-generation owners of Union Star Cheese Factory near Fremont.

Metzig will return to court on March 27 for further proceedings. The preliminary trial is set for March 30.
