Oh brother, what a team.
The Pewaukee Pirates captured a third straight Division 2 state championship by roaring over Whitnall 71-54 at the Kohl Center Saturday night.
The Pirates were led by the brothers Momcilovic, senior Milan dominated with 29 points and 9 rebounds while little brother Luka, a sophomore contributed a three point hoop. Milan, the co-Mr. Basketball in Wisconsin, took over the game in the second half as Pewaukee pulled away, the 6-8 Iowa State recruit filled it up from long range and finished at the rim.
Leading by five at the break after an up-tempo first 18 minutes where both teams combined to 61% from the floor, the Pirates stretched the lead as the rim got smaller for the Falcons. They missed 14 of their first 18 shots in the second half and never recovered. Whitnall’s brother tandem of senior Austin and sophomore Myles Herro, the younger brothers of Tyler Herro of the Miami Heat, scored 11 and 8 points respectively. Whitnall was led by Jack Lutz with 17 to finish 25-4, two of their losses coming to Woodland Conference rival Pewaukee.
The Pirates also got 20 points from Nick Janowski and 11 from Karson Osterman off the bench. They finished 27-3 for the third straight championship season, becoming the first school to three-peat since Whitefish Bay Dominican reeled off five in a row between 2012 and 2016.
