GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Visitors from all around the U.S. are getting a first-hand look into why Lambeau Field is known as the “Frozen Tundra.”
“It’s the coldest I’ve ever been in my life,” North Carolina Resident Elijah Gobel said.
Gobel said it’s the first time he’s ever been to a football game with temperatures in the teens.
“North Carolina ain’t got cold like this so I don’t know,” Gobel said. It might be a little different.”
For some visiting fans, they see the cold as an essential part of the Green Bay Packers experience.
“I’ve always wanted to be here just because I’ve heard about the ice bowl, how cold it was and I wanted to experience the cold,” One fan from California said.
“I just flew in from California,” California Resident Brandon Holley said. “I’ve been hanging out in 65-70 degree weather.”
Holley said he’s been to Lambeau several times before, so he knew to come prepared.
“Don’t tell anyone I’ve got two pairs of long johns, I’ve got a pair of joggers on and then pants. Couple pairs of socks, four or five layers on my chest. I’m ready.”
And some of the first timers were wishing they were as prepared as Holley.
“I hope so, but y’all got plenty of stuff for me to buy if I need more stuff,” Texas Resident Eric Wells said.
Wells made his first trip to Lambeau from his home state of Texas. He said the way the Packers thrive in the cold made him excited for the temperature to drop. Many others shared that same enthusiasm.
“Your hands are freezing, you still got to use your hands even though you got gloves,” Gobel said. “And you’re down in the pit and it’s gonna be what, 18 degrees? So I think it’ll be good for them.”
“I was telling my mom just walking here, it’s cold,” Holley said. “I don’t want to get hit in this, I don’t want to catch a pigskin in this. It’s freezing.”
The fans who were making the trip for the first time say Lambeau’s reputation was enough for them to come prepared.
“I got an extra jacket in the car, handwarmers, fuzzy socks on,” Gobel said. “So, I think I’ll be fine. Maybe.”
These fans’ freeze was not in vain, considering the Packers’ playoff hopes remained alive Monday night when the green and gold beat the L.A. Rams, 24-12.
