WAUPACA COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The battle between Waupaca County’s district attorney and sheriff continued Monday — the day before the sheriff faces a primary challenger.
At issue is a report in a criminal trespass case written by a sheriff’s deputy — then “changed” or “corrected,” depending on the point of view — and what the implications are of those actions.
District Attorney Veronica Isherwood issued a statement Monday that a special prosecutor has been appointed “to review the investigation for possible criminal charges.”
She notes a judge found the department improperly withheld exculpatory evidence by the changes made.
Sheriff Tim Wilz told FOX 11 Monday he is still reviewing Isherwood’s statement, but called it a political move, based on the timing.
An Outagamie County sheriff’s dept. review of the correction found no wrongdoing, Wilz said. Additionally, he said he filed a complaint against Isherwood for misconduct based on her handling of the incident.
Wilz faces Sgt. Cameron Durrant in Tuesday’s primary election.
