The West De Pere Phantom girls team captured the Division 1 championship at the WIAA State Track and Field meet in La Crosse. The Phantoms piled up 60.33 points to easily outdistance Homestead with 36 in capturing the first ever state title for a Green Bay Metro area team.
West De Pere took first in a pair of relay races, the 4×100 and 4×400 events. Eliza Aitken won silver medals in the 200 meter dash and the pole vault. Madeline Zirbel finished second in the high jump. Head Coach Craig Zellner had several other athletes produce points in an impressive run to the championship.
The West De Pere boys 4×100 relay team also took home a gold medal. Ben Smith of Hortonville won both the shot put and discus titles in Division 1.
Three impressive performances in Division 2 belonged to Kyle Wisnewski of New London who finished first in the triple jump and second place in both the long jump and high jump. Little Chute’s Gavin Fritsch won both the shot and discus titles. Shane Griepentrog of Valders won the 1600 meter race and defended his title in the 3200. In Division 3, Cade Stingle of Shiocton brought home first place finishes in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdle races.
Other individual efforts among area girls included Olivia Van Zeeland of Kaukauna winning the high jump in division 1, Notre Dame’s Anna Schueller captured the pole vault title. The Freedom girls finished second in the team standings and in Division 3, Kendal Stingle of Shiocton finished first in the 300 hurdles and second in the 100.
