POUND, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A train derailment has closed Highway 141 in Marinette County, sheriff’s officials confirm.
Sheriff Jerry Sauve says calls began coming in around 11:15 a.m. of the crash south of Highway 64 in the Town of Pound.
According to the preliminary investigation, two trucks, a box truck and a tanker truck, were stopped in the northbound lanes for the train as it was crossing the highway. A dump truck rear-ended the box truck, pushing it under the train. A second dump truck crashed into the first one, pushing it into train cars on the other side of the highway. The impact caused the train to derail and block the southbound lanes.
The driver of the box truck was killed. No one else appeared to be in the vehicle.
Fog was a factor in the crash, according to Sauve.
The highway is expected to be closed for several hours, and cleanup could take until Thursday morning. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
Highway 64 and Business 141 are being used as detours. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says the detour is “long-term.”
