APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Tuesday’s Old Glory Honor Flight will be a family affair. Two sets of brothers — both from the Lakeshore area — are making the trip to Washington, D.C.
“I don’t know if you know it, we’re triplets,” said Daniel Duchow. “And we were in the very first draft lottery, and we were number 221, and we had no idea how many numbers are they going to go through.”
Triplets Delton, David and Daniel Duchow went into the Army Reserve in 1970.
David and Daniel went to the same basic training camp, while Delton went to training two months earlier.
“The time they went, I was halfway done on mine already,” Delton told us. “So I got to come home for Christmas that year and they were down in Georgia, they were still at basic training yet. So I was kind of on my own that time.”
The brothers were given an opportunity to fly on the Old Glory Honor Flight to see war memorials in our nation’s capital.
“Just to see it all again, I’m taking my son. He’s never been there, so it will be an experience for him to go with dad and see all the things in Washington D.C. Everybody that’s been on, talking on Old Glory Honor Flight has told me it’s really fantastic,” Daniel said.
The Duchows aren’t the only trio of brothers that will be on the honor flight.
David, Robert and James Dvorachek will also make the trip.
“I was drafted the same week my brother David went to Vietnam. He went on Monday, and it was Holy Thursday in April when I got drafted,” James explained.
David was an infantryman in Vietnam, and Robert was military police. James served as military police stateside. They’re three of nine siblings in the family.
The Dvorachek brothers said it was a tough experience for their mother.
“I’m sure she prayed a lot. I’m sure she was I can remember when Bob was over there, I was still in high school and she would be sitting on the side of her bed praying at night,” James said.
James said the honor flight is a chance for them to spend more time together as they grow older, still sharing their humor.
“It’s going to be enjoyable, I’m sure. I’m a little skeptical because I’m not a traveler either. I’m a guy that likes to sit by the kitchen table and read the paper,” he said.
David chimed in, “We’re old farm boys, we live out in the country and pretty much stay there, out with the trees and all.”
Old Glory Honor Flight 84 will return to Appleton International Airport after their trip to Washington D.C. on Tuesday. The arrival is open to the public.
