(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) INDIANAPOLIS – The Marquette University women’s soccer team (4-1-5, 0-0-1 BIG EAST) played to a 1-1 draw against Butler (5-2-2, 0-0-1 BIG EAST) on Saturday night at Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl, as the Golden Eagles opened conference play on the road.
Neither side found the net in a tightly contested first half, with Marquette holding a 7-4 edge in shots.
The deadlock broke in the 75th minute. Haley Christianson buried a header set up by Kaylie Sheehan and Lilly Coats, scoring her team-leading fourth goal of the season and giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Butler answered in the game’s final minute, as they converted a diving header with nine seconds remaining in the match to level the score at 1-1 and secure the point for the Bulldogs.

CREIGHTON 3, MARQUETTE 2
Marquette erased a two-goal first-half deficit with a pair of goals in less than two minutes, but No. 7 Creighton scored the game-winner with a half hour to go to hand the Golden Eagles a 3-2 BIG EAST setback Saturday evening at Valley Fields. The Bluejays remain unbeaten at 9-0-2 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play, while Marquette fell to 6-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the BIG EAST.
Creighton struck first in the eighth minute as Matthew Reed tapped a rebound off a corner kick for his eighth goal of the season before Ange Gbe doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 18th minute.
The Golden Eagles responded quickly.
Senior forward Antonio Costabile cut the deficit in half two minutes later. Finishing a setup from Tomiwa Adewumi, Costabile cut inside and ripped a curling shot across the face of goal that found the inside of the right post. Just 1:44 later, defender Joey Buchanan brought Marquette level at 2-2, rising up for a header off a corner from Mateo Stoka. The ball again found the inside of the right post just outside of the outstretched arms of Matthew Hudson.
The match remained tied through halftime despite Creighton holding an 11-7 edge in shots over the opening 45 minutes.
In the 57th minute, Stoka thought he broke the deadlock but Hudson laid out to his right to push away his attempt that had eyes for the back of the net. Just three minutes later, Angel Lopez scored what would be the decisive goal, finishing off an assist from Brady Bragg inside the six-yard box to put the Bluejays back in front, 3-2.
With just under 20 minutes to go, Gabe Watkins appeared to score the equalizer, but for the second time this season, the freshman had a goal wiped a away due to VAR after there was a handball ruled in the lead-up to his goal.
Marquette pushed for the equalizer late and nearly found it in the 89th minute, but Costabile’s shot through traffic was turned aside by Hudson. The Golden Eagles had one last chance in the dying seconds. A long ball over the top found Mads Konrad Horgien and a tussle with a defender on the edge of the box ensued. With the match appearing to have ended with the striker laying on the ground in the box, the referee went to replay to determine if a foul occurred in the box with one second remaining. No penalty was awarded.
Creighton finished with a 17-11 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.

- Costabile’s goal was his first of the 2026 campaign.
- Stoka recorded his team-leading fifth assist of the season, while Adewumi picked up his second.
- Simpson made five saves, including three in the first half.
