GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The second phase of a redevelopment project along the Fox River in Green Bay is breaking ground.
City leaders officially broke ground on Phase II of the Shipyard site in the downtown Broadway District Monday.
“It’s obviously a beautiful site. And the fact that it’s on our waterfront is really incredible. You don’t find sites like this everyday,” said Brian Johnson, On Broadway, Inc. President & CEO.
This $14.3 million project transforms a long-idle stretch of the Fox River into a vibrant public park featuring a great lawn, urban beach, dog park, splash pad, lit volleyball courts, shipping crane-themed playground, and a riverfront container bar set to open in 2027.
“The goal is really recognizing that parks have changed, and parks have evolved beyond just some of the rec-leagues that we might be familiar, and it’s the acknowledgement that people can recreate and find enjoyment in their community in a lot of different ways,” he said.
The project is supported by a $7.15 million National Park Service grant, with general contractor 8Pine executing the $11.67 million construction contract.
The first phase of construction for the Shipyard District, an area just north of the Mason Street Bridge on the western edge of the Fox River, included a riverfront promenade, floating docks, fishing pier and kayak launch. That wrapped up in October of 2024.
Phase three of the project includes old shipping containers to house seasonal or limited-time businesses. There is no timeline for when that work could begin.
