(WISCONSIN TIMBER RATTLERS) BELOIT – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had a tough night in a 4-1 loss to the Beloit Sky Carp at ABC Supply Stadium on Thursday night. Wisconsin fell behind early, struggled for a bit hit on offense, and – due to circumstances – had to turn to a position player to cover the final two innings of the game. The loss ended Wisconsin’s three-game winning streak.
Beloit (64-64 overall, 37-26 second half) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first on two walks and a single. Chandler Welch, the Rattlers starting pitcher hit Abrahan Ramirez with a 1-2 pitch to force in the first run of the game. Welch retired the next two batters to hold the deficit at a run.
The Sky Carp added a run in the second. Emilio Barreras walked with one out. He was still at first with two outs when Jesus Hernandez doubled.
Barreras hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth and an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to put Beloit up 4-0.
Wisconsin (67-57, 33-29) put together two-out rallies against Sky Carp starter Nate Payne in the second and fourth innings. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with two outs in the second. A walk and a hit batsman with two outs in the extended the fourth. Payne escaped both innings with a strikeout.
The Rattlers were short pitching going into Thursday’s game and got shorter as the game developed. Scheduled starting pitcher Jayden Dubanewicz was scratched from the lineup prior to the game with Welch called upon to make his second start of the season – and first since May 5. He went 2-2/3 innings on 71 pitches and allowed the first two runs. Josh Quezada took over and struck out six over 2-1/3 while allowing the homer to Barreras in the fourth.
Bjorn Johnson, who earned the save on Tuesday night, went out to start the bottom of the sixth and got a strikeout before giving up a triple to Esmil Valencia. Johnson was in discomfort on the mound as Valencia raced for third base. Training staff and coaching staff attended to Johnson after the play and removed him from the game.
Tanner Perry, the winning pitcher on Tuesday night, entered from the bullpen and gave up the double to Barerras. He would get the final two outs of the inning, but after 29 pitches on Tuesday, Perry was done, too.
In the top of the seventh, the Rattlers offense rallied with two outs again. Daniel Dickinson and Eric Bitonti walked against Jesus Rios. Juan Ortuño smacked a single to left to score Dickinson. Rios walked Luis Castillo to load the bases and bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Tayden Hall put a charge into the first pitch he saw from Rios, but the ball died at the wall and was caught for the final out.
Position player Luiyin Alastre had to go to the mound for the Rattlers for the bottom of the seventh inning. It was the third time this season Alastre has needed to take the mound for the Rattlers. He would work two shutout innings, allow two hits, and strike out one.
The Timber Rattlers stranded twelve runners and went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the game.
Game four of the series is Friday night at ABC Supply Stadium. Andrew Healy (0-2, 5.71) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Emmett Olson (0-0, 8.00) has been announced as the starter for the Sky Carp. Game time is 6:05pm.
