MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A Reedsville man is facing more than 80 criminal charges and citations for allegedly illegally hunting, and then lying about it to wardens.
Luis Rodriguez, 24, faces 16 misdemeanor counts of shining, 15 counts of resisting a warden, and 15 counts of hunting during a closed season. More than 40 other citations were issued for a variety of offenses, including taking an animal without a tag, hunting after hours, and discharging a firearm across a highway.
An initial court appearance is scheduled for Thursday.
According to the criminal complaint, police were called to Mishicot after someone saw a suspect dumping two headless deer carcasses along Hillview Road.
Using the license plate reported, wardens tracked down Rodriguez. He gave them an accounting his recent hunting activities.
At a later interview, Rodriguez changed his story, and admitted to shining, hunting out of season, reporting bucks he shot as antlerless deer, and other illegal actions.
The wardens then investigated another incident in mid-January. At first, he denied it, but then changed his story.
“When questioned further about the deer Luis changed his story and stated that he was driving down the road and used his 9mm to shoot the deer. Luis admitted he shot off the road, and stated he shot “that buck” as he pointed out the window to the buck that was on the bed of my patrol truck. Luis also admitted he used his LED headlights on his truck to shoot the deer. Luis stated the 9mm handgun that he used was in his truck,” the complaint states.
