Kewaunee County board votes to make half-cent sales tax permanent

KEWAUNEE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Kewaunee County’s sales tax will now be permanent, following a vote from the county’s board Tuesday night.

The half-cent sales tax was originally instituted on April 1, 2017. It was later extended in 2021 through the end of 2026 due to the closure of the county’s nuclear power plant.

On Tuesday night, the county board voted to keep the sales tax permanent.

Any future changes to the sales tax would need to be passed by the Kewaunee County Board.

The tax collected $161,307 in May, for a year-to-date total then of $602,397, according to Finance & Public Property Committee minutes.
