DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Sheriff’s officials are urging people to wear life jackets after at least three water searches in recent days.
“Door County’s waters are beautiful but can be extremely unpredictable. Weather, waves, currents, and water conditions can change rapidly, creating dangerous situations for boaters, paddlers, and swimmers,” read a statement from the sheriff’s office.
“Swimmers, especially those unfamiliar with the area, should also consider using a flotation device and never swim alone. Before heading out, always check the weather and water conditions, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return, and be prepared to change your plans if conditions deteriorate.”
Officials reminded people that state law requires life jackets be available for everyone on board a boat, kayak, canoe, paddleboard, or other floating vessel.
One of the recent searches ended in tragedy. Two kayakers went missing near Washington Island on Sunday. The bodies of 20-year-old David Thalman of Dundee, Illinois, and 20-year-old Franceska Warick of South Elgin, Illinois, were found Monday morning.
