(LEARFIELD) – For the sixth time in seven meetings, the Pittsburgh Pirates have defeated the Brewers.
Monday night’s score was 4-3.
A bases-clearing double by Spencer Horwitz in the third inning with Jake Mangum’s bunt single in the fourth inning helping the Pirates jump out to a four-run edge.
Milwaukee was held to six singles, three by infielder Joey Ortiz.
Ortiz drove in a run for the Brewers in the fifth inning to make cut Pittsburgh’s lead to 4-1 with Andrew Vaughn driving in 2 runs in the sixth with a single to make it 4-3.
Brandon Sproat took his seventh loss of the season. Sproat lasted only 3+ innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 4.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy talked about Sproat.
Murphy was asked if Sproat felt the pressure of the trade deadline.
Sproat said that it was a tough day.
And all he can do is keep plugging away.
Murphy said that the Pirates have played great against the Brewers.
Pittsburgh’s Bubba Chandler got the win. Chandler went 5 2/3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks. He struck out 5.
The Brewers try to even the behind Logan Henderson. Henderson is 5-1 with a 2.66 ERA.
The Pirates will counter with Jared Jones who is 2-2 with a 3.81 ERA.
