(MILWAUKEE BREWERS) – The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired right-handed starter Dustin May and left-handed reliever JoJo Romero from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for outfielders Alexander Frías and Josiah Ragsdale.
The Brewers also acquired right-handed reliever Antonio Senzatela from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for left-handed pitcher Mark Manfredi and infielder Juan Martínez. May, 28, has gone 5-7 with a 4.38 ERA in 21 starts this season with the Cardinals. He has 106 strikeouts in 109.0 innings pitched. Over his eight-year Major League career, he is 24-27 with a 3.99 ERA in 92 games/78 starts with Los Angeles-NL (2019-25), Boston (2025) and St. Louis (2026). He missed the 2024 season while recovering from his second “Tommy John” surgery and an esophageal tear. May has a mutual option for the 2027 season.
Romero, 29, has gone 1-3 with a 3.35 ERA in 44 relief appearances this season with the Cardinals. He is currently on the 15-day injured list recovering from an appendectomy. He has 43 strikeouts in 43.0 innings pitched and has stranded 20 of 28 inherited runners. He enjoyed his best season in the Major Leagues in 2025 as he recorded a 2.07 ERA and career-high 8 saves in a career-high-tying 65 relief appearances. Romero has pitched for Philadelphia (2020-22) and St. Louis (2022-26). He is a free agent at the end of the season.
Frías, 18, signed with Milwaukee as a non-drafted free agent from the Dominican Republic in January 2025. He split this season between the Rookie ACL Brewers (32 games) and Class-A Wilson (28 games) and batted .342 (78-for-228) with 8 HR, 62 RBI and 19 SB in 60 games. He was ranked as the eighth-best prospect in the organization according to Baseball America and 11th according to MLB Pipeline.
Ragsdale, 22, was selected by Milwaukee in the seventh round of the 2025 First-Year Player Draft from Boston College. He batted .316 (98-for-310) with 19 HR, 51 RBI and 31 SB in 86 games this season between Class-A Wisconsin (60 games) and Double-A Biloxi (26 games). He was ranked as the 22nd-best prospect in the organization according to Baseball America and 13th according to MLB Pipeline.
And from Colorado: Senzatela, 31, has spent his entire 10-year Major League career (2017-26) with the Rockies, appearing in 212 games/145 starts. He has pitched exclusively in relief this season, going 9-2 with 3.61 ERA and 3 saves in 34 appearances. In his career as a reliever, Senzatela has gone 11-3 with a 3.75 ERA and 3 saves in 67 appearances. Conversely, he is 41-58 with a 5.29 ERA as a starter. Senzatela has a club option for the 2027 season.
Manfredi, 26, was selected in the ninth round of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft from the University of Dayton. He was 4-2 with 3.35 ERA and 5 saves in 34 relief appearances this season between Double-A Biloxi (16 games) and Triple-A Nashville (18 games).
Martínez, 19, was signed as a non-drafted free agent in January 2024 from Venezuela. He batted .307 (61-for-199) with 7 HR, 33 RBI and 27 SB in 58 games between the Rookie ACL Brewers (40 games) and Class-A Wilson (18 games).
