OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Willie Rollins is competent to stand trial on charges he killed his boyfriend during an argument, and his criminal case will resume.
Rollins, 33, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide for the Jan. 5 shooting at a home on Ninth Avenue.
The results of the competency exam mean Rollins is able to understand the proceedings and assist in his own defense.
A possible plea hearing was scheduled for Oct. 12, court records show.
According to the complaint, Rollins walked into the lobby of the Oshkosh Police Department “holding a firearm and a magazine clip in his hands, with his hands outstretched from his body” and placed the items in a metal tray at the front desk counter. Rollins then said, “I just killed my boyfriend and he’s in the basement,” the complaint states.
Police responded to the home and found the victim with a gunshot wound to his head. The victim was not identified by name. He is referred to as “V1” in the criminal complaint, which states:
V1 had been working on his electronic devices and this caused his devices not to work. Before Rollins could add V1’s devices back on, V1 brought the internet router up to Rollins’ room on the second level. V1 threw the router on Rollins’ bed while Rollins was sitting on the bed. This started a verbal argument between Rollins and V1 over who would pay for the internet. Rollins stated that he wanted to keep paying the internet bill as this was the last bill that was in Rollins’ name. Rollins stated that V1 would not allow Rollins to help pay the other bills. Rollins stated that he took the internet router down to the basement to plug it in. V1 followed him down the stairs. Rollins reached up to plug the internet router back in. V1 reached over Rollins’ back to unplug the fiber. Rollins stated that the fiber is fragile and could break easily. Rollins elbowed V1 and that got V1 to back off. Rollins stated that he turned around and, when V1 came toward him, he pushed V1. After pushing V1, Rollins grabbed an office chair that was nearby and hit V1 at least twice in the head with the chair. Rollins stated that he dropped the chair. V1 came at Rollins and Rollins stated that when they met, they fell to the ground. While on the ground, Rollins punched V1 twice in the face with his right hand. After punching V1, Rollins stood up and backed up. Rollins stated that V1 stood up as well, but as he turned towards Rollins, Rollins shot at V1 twice.
Rollins admitted to police he did not think the shooting was necessary, the complaint states.
