(WTAQ-WLUK) — The Democratic primary field for Wisconsin governor is getting a bit thinner.
Missy Hughes has suspended her campaign, she announced Monday.
“I am proud to have served Wisconsin as a mother raising a family, as a member of our small community, through the farmers of Organic Valley, and as Secretary of Wisconsin Economic Development,” Hughes said in a news release.
“I will always look for ways to serve, but it won’t be as governor.”
Hughes got into the race in September, days after stepping down as head of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.
At the state Democratic party convention earlier this month, Hughes received only 10 of 597 votes in a straw poll conducted by WisPolitics.com.
Hughes said she was endorsing Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez in the Democratic primary.
Rodriguez won the poll with 164 votes. Another five candidates remain in the race on the Democratic side: State Rep. Francesca Hong, State Sen. Kelda Roys, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, former Department of Administration secretary Joel Brennan and former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes.
The winner of the Aug. 11 primary will face presumptive Republican nominee Tom Tiffany.
