GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Brown County was recognized Wednesday for energy efficiency projects that are helping save both the Earth and taxpayer dollars.
Focus on Energy, Wisconsin’s statewide energy efficiency and renewable energy program, honored Brown County with a 2026 Energy Efficiency Excellence Award. The presentation was held at the Brown County STEM Innovation Center, located on the UW-Green Bay campus.
“This award highlights organizations that have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to efficiency and those who go above and beyond to reduce energy waste, operate more sustainably and lower their costs,” said Leah Maggio, the business portfolio manager for Focus on Energy. “It’s especially gratifying when we can showcase our local governments who lead by example within their communities, shaping regional growth and development in a meaningful way.”
According to officials, Brown County’s long-term commitment to improving public facilities by reducing energy use is expected to save approximately $4.5-$5.2 million in utility costs over the life of the installed equipment.
Projects completed since 2017 include the Brown County Jail and Law Enforcement Center, the Brown County Courthouse complex, Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport, libraries and the STEM Innovation Center.
“A lot of [our] buildings are outdated. They need renovation, they need updates,” said Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach. “What can we do as a county to be more efficient? What can we do to make sure that our air quality is better for the people who are inside and what we’re producing outside?”
Focus on Energy said it receives award nominations “for Wisconsin businesses and organizations striving to go above and beyond basic energy efficiency.”
“These success stories highlight what these organizations accomplished to become an Energy Efficiency Excellence Award recipient and energy efficiency influencer in their industries,” the group said.
